I also have a 2001 and have the same problem but only after I have hit reserve and refilled. As usual, once I refill I put it back to ON and once going I have the 'starving' problem. I put it back on reserve for a k or 2 and then back to on and no problems.
I assume its some sort of vacuum problem after hitting reserve.
